La Campagne, La Ville : Martin Crimp est-il un auteur qui attache de l’importance aux lieux ?
Patrick Schmitt : D’un point de vue réaliste non. Mais d’un point de vue dramaturgique et métaphorique certainement. La campagne, vous savez, c’est toujours un peu la même chose, elle déroule une notion d’infini. Dans cette pièce, la campagne joue le rôle d’un no man’s land, un peu comme dans Fin de partie ou En attendant Godot. C’est un monde ouvert mais qui emprisonne. La pièce est un huis clos qui n’a pas de mur et la campagne un infini dans lequel on se retrouve enfermé.
Que se passe-t-il dans ce huis clos ?
P.S : La pièce démarre comme un thriller. Un médecin ramène chez lui une femme inanimée qu’il aurait ramassée sur le bord de la route. Mais petit à petit, sa femme doute de plus en plus de la véracité des circonstances de cette rencontre. Un rapport de cruauté lie les personnages de cette pièce. Ils évoluent dans un monde sans morale, un monde de prédateurs, du chacun pour soi, très à l’image de notre 21ème siècle. Et petit à petit, le fil de l’intrigue disparaît derrière des enjeux plus philosophiques.

Le théâtre de Crimp, entre réalité et métaphore, est réputé comme assez difficile à travailler…
P.S : C’est vrai. C’est un auteur excitant et intrigant. Pour m’approprier le texte, j’ai dû opérer en plusieurs lectures, en plusieurs couches superposées à quelques mois d’intervalle. Certaines répliques sont hachées, répétées, laissent un mot en suspens. D’autres se chevauchent au signal typographique d’un slash. C’est une vraie partition musicale qui ne tolère pas l’improvisation et exige la précision nécessaire. En fait, Crimp est un vrai dramaturge, dans le sens où il écrit pour des acteurs et où l’on a toujours à chercher au-delà de ce qui est écrit.
Et que trouve-t-on au-delà de ce qui est écrit ?
P.S : Le risque pour les comédiens serait d’intellectualiser et de vouloir mettre des intentions là ou le langage quotidien de Crimp – qui n’a rien à voir avec le quotidien – se suffit à lui-même. Pour moi, Crimp est dans la lignée d’Harold Pinter : il fait un théâtre noir avec cet humour anglais qui fonctionne si bien. Déjà chez Shakespeare on tranche les têtes et on rigole.
Comment ce spectacle s’inscrit-il dans votre projet à la Forge ?
P.S : La Forge est une ancienne usine que nous avons reconvertie en théâtre. Nous avons voulu en faire un théâtre de célébration du théâtre. Non pas un lieu qui cède aux modes mais où l’on mette en scène l’Homme, avec ce qu’il a de monstrueux et de génial. C’est ce que nous faisons naturellement ici, aussi avec les spectacles que nous recevons, comme dans le passé celui de Judith Depaule sur le goulag, ou avec le Discours de la servitude volontaire à venir de François Clavier.
