« Pierre Michon est un écrivain très important. Il se situe, de mon point de vue, très au-dessus de ce qui se passe dans la littérature française. Son écriture est impressionnante, et d’ailleurs assez difficile à porter à la scène. Car, comme il le dit lui-même, il compose des récits où il n’y a pas de gras. Ainsi, dès que l’on veut enlever quelque chose, car les formats du théâtre ne sont pas ceux de la littérature, on a l’impression que tout va s’effondrer, que l’équilibre de l’ensemble ne peut supporter la moindre amputation. Maîtres et serviteurs – ouvrage duquel est extrait le texte de Lorentino d’Arezzo – est une passionnante histoire de l’art. De façon très personnelle, très originale, Pierre Michon s’est emparé de la problématique de la peinture, du chef-d’œuvre, du maître, en se penchant sur la vie de Goya, de Watteau et de Lorentino, un disciple de Piero della Francesca. Ceci sans s’éloigner de ce qui fait son écriture : un rapport à la ruralité, à l’apprentissage, à l’inéluctabilité du temps qui passe…

Je crois qu’il n’est pas toujours possible de faire renaître la littérature sur scène. L’histoire de ce peintre toscan le permet car il s’agit d’une fable, d’un récit très charpenté, qui contient toute une interrogation que l’on peut faire jaillir. Le théâtre est une manière de rendre audible tout ce qui n’est pas dit dans un texte, les choses qui sont enfouies, qui se transmettent à travers d’autres moyens que les mots. Ce sont toutes ces parties cachées qu’un comédien peut faire apparaître, en ébranlant nos certitudes, les fausses évidences qui s’imposent parfois à nous. Car on est souvent trop paresseux, on pose trop souvent un regard fixe et mécanique sur le monde. Porter à la scène ce récit est ainsi une tentative de nous faire changer de regard. Qu’est-ce que la peinture ? Qu’est-ce que l’art ? L’évocation que fait Pierre Michon de la réalisation d’un tableau est merveilleuse. C’est bouleversant de se retrouver dans le crâne d’un homme du Quattrocento. »
