Comment avez-vous choisi cette pièce de Feydeau ?
Paul Golub : J’ai eu envie de me confronter à un rire qui diffère de celui de Shakespeare. Au premier regard, les personnages sont pris dans la tourmente de leurs désirs. Derrière ce rire, se cachent des enjeux, une profondeur qu’on ne soupçonne pas, la condition humaine. La mécanique extérieure des événements répond à une mécanique intérieure intime. L’ensemble dessine un univers de pièges terrifiants qui fait s’esclaffer le spectateur.

À quoi est dû ce désastre dont vous parlez ?
P. G. : Le manque d’amour et de communication entre les êtres conduit à cette situation catastrophique ; quelque chose à la fois de drôle, de tragique et de moderne. Les hommes et les femmes sont prisonniers d’une machine à frustrations : ils se poursuivent sans cesse sans jamais parvenir à leurs fins. Dans ce manège emballé de machinations, quatorze comédiens évoluent dont Romane Bohringer, David Ayala, Brontis Jodorowsky, des acteurs différents de corps et de caractère. Cette troupe reflète une tranche fidèle d’humanité.
Feydeau reste-t-il ancré dans le dix-neuvième siècle ?
P. G. : L’époque de Feydeau est transposée à nos jours. C’est une façon pour le public de recevoir les enjeux réels de la pièce, les empêchements du désir sexuel, une forme de manque qu’on essaie de combler. L’hôtel de Minet-Galant où se passe une partie de l’action est un lieu de fantasmes, de transpositions et d’équivalences, dans les costumes par exemple, farfelus à certains égards, mais inscrits dans le réel. Feydeau traite avec humour du jeu des personnages et de l’acteur, non du cabotinage de comédien. Le public apprécie cette grandeur dramaturgique, loin des clichés du rire immédiat.
Peut-on comparer ce théâtre à celui de l’absurde ?
P. G. : L’auteur porte un regard jubilatoire et vachard sur les hypocrisies et les entraves de la bourgeoisie du Second Empire. Il faut savoir admettre aujourd’hui l’inquiétude et la peur qui minent l’être dans la modernité. On a souvent comparé l’œuvre de Feydeau à celle de Ionesco, à son théâtre de l’absurde. Cette vision de l’homme est déterminée par l’incontrôlable, un inconscient qui le structure sans qu’il le sache. Apparemment repu et décomplexé, il demeure insatisfait et empêché. Malgré la dureté de la vision de Feydeau dans cette complexité des relations humaines, le rire apporte son pouvoir de métamorphose et de libération sur les défaillances du couple.
