Un standard de jazz, qu’est-ce d’autre qu’un morceau connu de tous sur lequel chacun se plait à improviser comme il lui sied ? C’est fort de cette philosophie que le pianiste Paul Lay — artiste attaché à la Scala, qui l’a présenté à Paris dans différentes configurations et a publié son récent album en hommage à Bill Evans — a entrepris d’approcher les mélodies de Beethoven. Tirées de sonate, de symphonie ou de lied — on y retrouve même l’inoxydable Lettre à Élise —, elles deviennent sous ses doigts le véhicule de ses talents d’improvisateur doté d’une technique remarquable et d’une imagination féconde. « Du rythme, des mélodies entêtantes, des ruptures, du silence et surtout, du mystère » : ainsi Paul Lay résume-t-il les lignes de force de sa démarche. Un solo complet, conçu en partie au cours d’un voyage à Vienne où le pianiste a composé quelques pièces en hommage au maître qu’il intègre à son récital.
