Que raconte votre Grand Cahier ?
Paula Giusti : Au-delà de l’histoire de ces deux jumeaux que recueille leur grand-mère, j’ai voulu traiter du sentiment face à la douleur. Pour moi, cette histoire est celle de l’endurcissement de l’âme humaine lorsqu’elle doit affronter la réalité. Les jumeaux doivent être pragmatiques, ils laissent le sentiment de côté pour avoir la force de continuer. Et il y a là-dedans une cruauté universelle et subtile : celle de quitter l’enfance.
On parle en effet pour votre pièce d’un retour au fameux théâtre de la cruauté.
P.G : Pourtant, je ne le qualifierais pas comme ça. Bien sûr quand on parle de la guerre, comment ne pas faire quelque chose qui frappe ? Et la pièce porte en elle les couleurs de l’Est et des images venues de Kantor. Mais il n’y a pas de sang, pas de cruauté dans le sens externe des choses. Simplement il s’agit d’une pièce où les héros doivent grandir. Et grandir, c’est une espèce de séparation, le début d’un chemin vers la solitude.
Est-ce cette séparation que vous souhaitez figurer en dédoublant vos personnages ?
P.G : Chaque personnage est joué par deux comédiens parce que tout le roman d’Agota Kristof captive le lecteur autour de cette question : qui parle ? Est-ce que ce sont deux personnes ou bien un seul et unique narrateur ? Et cette question a bien sûr des résonances intimes : Qui nous sommes ? Combien nous sommes ? Qui parle en nous ? Combien parlent en nous ? J’ai beaucoup travaillé sur Fernando Pessoa et Agota Kristof est née l’année même de sa mort. Peut-être qu’il s’est alors produit une mutation de son âme !
Portez-vous vous-même des traces de séparations ?
P.G : J’ai dû quitter l’Argentine en raison de la crise économique. D’où je viens, de Tucuman, les conséquences de la crise étaient encore plus désastreuses qu’à Buenos Aires, avec notamment le retour d’une forte mortalité infantile et des phénomènes de malnutrition. Mais rien qu’à grandir, on doit se séparer de certaines convictions, de certaines certitudes. Et si en plus, il faut s’exiler, traverser des frontières, changer de culture, tout devient incertain, jusqu’à la langue même.
Etes-vous soutenue par le Théâtre du Soleil en raison de proximités esthétiques ?
P.G : J’y ai bien sûr beaucoup appris mais je tiens à défendre mon propre univers. La pièce présente un monde étrange, plastiquement beau : c’est une horreur qui se laisse regarder, porteuse d’une étrangeté qui nous protège. Et je travaille surtout guidée par cette idée de Meyerhold, qu’au théâtre on avance seconde par seconde, et que chaque seconde y est différente d’une seconde dans le réel : elle doit toujours être musclée, dense et revêtue d’une forme propre.
