Ecrits à près de dix ans d’intervalle, La femme qui se cognait dans les portes (1996) et Paula Spencer (2006) de l’écrivain irlandais Roddy Doyle retracent le calvaire d’une femme battue pendant 17 ans, alcoolique, mère de quatre enfants, qui malgré tout aime son mari. Dans le second roman, le mari n’est plus là – il a été tué dix ans auparavant par la police lors d’un braquage de banque -, elle a arrêté de boire, depuis peu, et ses enfants ont grandi. Son fils a pu décrocher de l’héroïne et a renoué avec elle après une longue absence, l’une de ses filles vit plutôt bien, l’autre boit et le petit dernier ne semble pas trop abîmé. Michel Abécassis adapte le texte en gardant pour unique personnage Paula, parlant à la première personne, interprétée par une actrice franco-irlandaise de référence, Olwen Fouéré. Longs cheveux blonds décolorés, vêtements bon marché, regard clair ou masqué de lunettes de soleil, voix rauque, présence rêche, marquée par la vie, elle se livre à travers cette parole cathartique qui décrit des douleurs si souvent tues et niées. Elle n’a rien à cacher car à ce stade la survie a été tellement remplie de choses moches que toute bienséance ou hypocrisie sociale serait hors sujet.
Une langue d’un humour caustique
Cette accumulation de malheurs, à la fois ordinaire dans sa logique sociale et extraordinaire du point de vue de la souffrance individuelle, atteint son paroxysme dans la relation pervertie avec les enfants, quand l’amour devient une chose impossible à exprimer. Les risques d’une telle représentation, et d’autant plus lorsqu’elle est réduite à un seul personnage, sans toute la richesse des romans, ce sont le spectacle de la banalité de la catastrophe, une sorte de naturalisme au mieux documentaire et au pire misérabiliste, voire un malaise qui peut naître face à la crudité d’une souffrance théâtralisée. Globalement, la pièce évite ces écueils grâce à la langue de Roddy Doyle où la force de vivre demeure incroyablement tenace, une langue simple, lucide, franche et d’un humour souvent caustique. « Je suis au plus bas de la société. Je le sais. Je le sens. » dit-elle. Debout, au fil d’une mise en scène sobre, elle assume sa solitude et l’adresse théâtrale au public. « Questionnez-moi. Allez-y. » dit-elle. Dans une scénographie minimaliste, la pièce souligne qu’après une telle épreuve et une telle déchéance, elle parvient à retrouver l’envie d’aimer… et celle d’écouter de la musique.
