Peer Gynt, qui croise les genres, regorge de personnages, multiplie les rebondissements et s’affranchit des contraintes matérielles du théâtre, a la réputation d’être quasi impossible à mettre en scène. Pour affronter la « démesure mythique » de cette œuvre inclassable, Eric Ruf investit le Salon d’honneur du Grand Palais. Le metteur en scène y installe, pour illustrer le parcours existentiel de ce rêveur fantasque en quête de lui-même, « une grande route sur laquelle défilent et se perdent nos fantômes et nos rêves ». Selon un dispositif bi-frontal, on suit Peer Gynt, mauvais garçon acculé à la fuite pour avoir déshonoré une jeune mariée le jour de ses noces, batifolant parmi les trolls, exilé en Afrique où il devient marchand d’esclaves, avant de revenir en Norvège, pour y retrouver l’amour de Solveig, dont le chant (magnifié par Grieg) est peut-être le seul moyen de cette réalisation de soi qui taraude tant Peer Gynt.
