Les suites orchestrales tirées par Edvard Grieg de sa musique de scène figurent depuis plus d’un siècle parmi les chevaux de bataille du répertoire. On ne saurait en dire autant de la pièce d’Ibsen, qui n’était pas initialement destinée à la scène. Pour narrer l’odyssée du peu attachant Peer Gynt, Jean-Philippe Clarac et Olivier Deloeil ont élaboré une sorte de « collage symboliste qui suggère plus qu’il ne représente. Il se nourrit de l’étrangeté poétique qui surgira des rencontres entre l’orchestre symphonique, les chanteurs, les acteurs, les projections vidéo et nos différentes formes de théâtre d’objet. L’histoire de Peer Gynt nous est bien racontée, mais sans être incarnée. ». Placé sur scène, l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Limoges, dirigé par Nicolas Chalvin, se retrouve au cœur de la proposition scénique : il devient « le paysage à travers lequel se meuvent acteurs et chanteurs », parmi lesquels Philippe Estèphe (Peer Gynt) et Norma Nahoum (Solveig).
