DES PIANISTES DANS L’ETE / PARIS
Peg Carrothers porte le nom d’un immense pianiste du jazz d’aujourd’hui, dont elle partage la vie depuis plus de 20 ans à Mass City, dans la péninsule supérieure du Michigan. Dans la paisible vie familiale qu’ils mènent dans cet environnement privilégié de nature et de forêts, à quelques kilomètres de l’immense Lac Supérieur, elle a développé un rapport singulier à la musique et au chant, ne se définissant jamais comme une musicienne professionnelle (elle est bibliothécaire à la ville), mais livrant dans la musique une touchante part d’elle-même où sa simplicité, sa sincérité et la beauté pure de sa voix font merveille. Cette musicalité où les silences sonnent autant que les notes, et où la pudeur des choses non dites compte autant que l’expression de ses émotions, nous parvient avec d’autant plus d’intensité qu’elle se livre dans le dépouillement d’arrangements splendides signés de la main de son pianiste de mari, Bill Carrothers. Ils sont sur ce chemin de tendre communion musicale dans une forme de ralenti subtilement flouté, idéalement entourés, au disque, de Dean Magraw (guitares) et Billy Peterson (contrebasse), et lors de ce concert de sortie parisien dans le cadre du Festival Jazz Vocal au Sunset, de Jean-Philippe Viret (contrebasse) et Matt Turner (violoncelle).
