Plus que n’importe quel ouvrage lyrique, Pelléas et Mélisande est à la frontière entre le théâtre et la musique, entre le parlé et le chanté. C’est la rencontre idéale entre la musique elliptique de Debussy et l’écriture symboliste de Maeterlinck. Pour aborder cet opéra, il faut trouver le binôme idoine metteur en scène-chef d’orchestre. Nous sommes donc très impatients de découvrir la nouvelle production de l’Opéra Comique, confiée à Stéphane Braunschweig et à John Eliot Gardiner. Le premier sait toujours éviter, dans ses mises en scène, autant les écueils de la reconstitution passéiste que ceux de la provocation post-moderne. C’est un théâtre à échelle humaine, marqué par une grande intelligence psychologique. Le second, connu pour sa démarche de pionnier du mouvement sur instruments anciens, possède une vraie affinité avec la musique française, dont il restitue parfaitement les subtilités instrumentales. Le casting réunit dans les rôles-titres deux voix remarquables : Phillip Addis et Karen Vourc’h. Cette production peut, enfin, être vue comme un retour aux sources : c’est à l’Opéra Comique qu’a été créé en 1902 Pelléas et Mélisande.
