Homère, poète de L’Odyssée,met en scène les exploits exceptionnels d’Ulysse, un homme bien supérieur par sa force, son courage ou son intelligence à l’humanité ordinaire. Le surhomme est un héros, entre le dieu et le commun des mortels : il a subi des épreuves apparemment insurmontables. L’épopée dramatique de Pénélope ô Pénélope place pareillement son héros Elias (merveilleux Simon Abkarian, auteur, comédien et metteur en scène) et son héroïne Dinah (jolie et volontaire Catherine Schaub-Abkarian) dans un monde mi-réel et mi-féerique. Sur le plateau, ont droit de cité les monstres et les magiciens, des métaphores de l’homme ballotté par des forces redoutables qu’il peine à maîtriser. Ainsi, près d’Ulysse-Elias se tient non seulement sa conscience personnifiée, une jeunesse pleine de raison et de bon sens (malicieuse Sarajeanne Drillaud) mais encore sa défunte mère, sous les traits moqueurs de Georges Bigot en travesti ironique. Rivée à sa machine à coudre, l’épouse attend en vain un époux qui ne revient pas de ses guerres achevées. Coupable d’autant de meurtres qu’il y a d’étoiles dans le ciel, le guerrier a changé. Sera-t-il reconnu par sa moitié si terrible de constance ?
Une écriture sensuelle, épicée et âcre
La vie n’est pour la femme oubliée qu’un tissu souple qui échappe à ses coutures. Cet Ulysse reste désespérément absent tandis que l’efficace Ante (troublant John Arnold), le propriétaire du logement, n’en finit pas de partir à l’assaut sexuel de son honorable voisine. Le fils du couple mythique, grand reporter photographe, revient au foyer entre les amertumes de la mère et la trahison du père. Le spectateur se laisse bercer par les vagues généreuses et éloquentes d’une écriture sensuelle, épicée et âcre parfois jusqu’à la crudité. Le style épique hyperbolique grossit les faits à la manière orientale, simplifie et transfigure le caractère des héros, orchestre puissamment les émotions contrastées que suscitent leurs aventures, joies et douleurs, combats et amours, aspirations et échecs, vie et mort. Nous sommes ces héros d’aujourd’hui, des êtres traversés par des déconvenues et des rêves insensés dans des temps durs qui ne laissent nulle place au silence ni aux valeurs humaines mais à la réussite uniquement, « cette maquerelle du bonheur » dans une forêt où ne restent que les loups. La dignité ? « Une vieillerie qu’on entasse dans le tiroir du temps ». Le spectacle est émouvant et raffiné, il porte haut les exigences du théâtre entre les simples pas d’une danse terrienne, quelques voiles déployées et l’écran vidéo où rugit le grand large.
