Comme l’affirme le slogan si connu : le peuple uni ne sera jamais vaincu ! Tel est sans doute le point de départ de People United de Joanne Leighton. Il faut avouer que le geste chorégraphique peut se glisser subrepticement dans la plupart des manifestations, qu’elles soient politiques ou simplement festives, utopiques ou profondément spirituelles. Ici, Joanne Leighton s’inspire de photographies de mouvements contestataires ou de célébrations en tout genre qu’elle collectionne depuis plus de dix ans, parallèlement à son travail de chorégraphe. Elle en extrait une gestuelle qui rend hommage à ces flux énergétiques que distille toute foule en marche ou en colère. Dans ce troisième opus d’une trilogie consacré aux mouvements universels, après 9000 Pas (2015) et Songlines (2018), neuf danseurs poings levés et corps tendus clament leur désir de liberté, ou l’espoir de lendemains qui chantent – pourquoi pas ? –, tandis que Joanne Leighton explore les mécanismes de l’enthousiasme de ces mouvements de masse, qui peuvent produire le pire et le meilleur de l’humanité.
