Qu’est-ce qui vous a interpellé dans la figure de Bach ?
Pere Portabella : Bach est aujourd’hui une véritable icône. Pourtant, à son époque, il n’a jamais été vraiment reconnu comme compositeur. Celui qui était célèbre alors, c’était Haendel. Bach était réputé pour être un bon organiste et un Cantor efficace. Il y a chez Bach une vraie dimension artisanale. J’ai essayé de montrer cela en filmant des gens qui travaillent : des routiers, des bouchers…
Votre film est construit par séquences et n’obéit à aucun fil narratif. Pourquoi un tel traitement formel ?
P.P. : Je n’ai pas voulu faire une biographie, ni un concert filmé. Dans tous mes films, je remets en question les codes narratifs. Aujourd’hui, les films qui sont réalisés se basent sur la même construction héritée des grands romans de Balzac ou d’Hugo. Au XXème siècle, la musique et la peinture ont connu de véritables bouleversements, avec l’atonalité et l’abstraction. Mais pas le cinéma… sans doute car il s’agit d’un spectacle de masse, ce qui conditionne sa production. Pour moi, l’essentiel est que le spectateur devienne le véritable protagoniste du film, en imaginant l’action suivant sa propre sensibilité.

Votre film se déroule à l’époque de Bach, mais aussi à celle de Mendelssohn et de nos jours. Que cherchez-vous à montrer par ces allers-retours ?
P.P. : La musique de Bach est très actuelle. Ecoutez combien ses œuvres, comme le Prélude de la Première Suite pour violoncelle, utilisent le principe de répétition que l’on retrouve chez les minimalistes américains. Je voulais par ailleurs filmer la légende selon laquelle Mendelssohn aurait découvert la musique de Bach en achetant de la viande enveloppée dans une partition de la Passion selon Saint Jean. C’est évidemment faux, c’est la grand-mère de Mendelssohn qui lui a offert des partitions de Bach, mais peu importe… En filmant l’époque contemporaine, je cherchais enfin à comprendre comment une nation comme l’Allemagne a pu à la fois engendrer un génie tel que Bach et planifier un génocide.
Comment définiriez-vous l’esthétique du Silence avant Bach ?
P.P. : Ma façon de filmer est sans doute plus musicale que littéraire. Aujourd’hui, les cinéastes réalisent, dans un film d’une heure et demie, une moyenne de 800 plans. Dans Le Silence avant Bach, il y en a 220. Une telle technique me donne beaucoup de liberté.
