L’action se déroule dans une commune de province, à une heure du col du Perthus. Deux adolescents, Jean-Louis et Paul, deviennent complices : une complicité aux accents amoureux. Quant à leurs mères (interprétées par des comédiens), elles se rapprochent elles aussi et nouent une amitié qui survivra à celle de leurs fils. Pour cette nouvelle pièce, Jean-Marie Besset a conçu « une histoire où autofiction et fiction se mélangent ». « Démêler les fils de l’inspiration ne m’intéresse pas forcément, avoue Gilbert Désveaux. En revanche, je retiens l’ancrage temporel et géographique de [Perthus]. C’est-à-dire une période (les années 70 de V.G.E.) et un lieu (la petite ville du Midi) où [Paul] vit avec ses parents. Car même si l’auteur ne date pas sa pièce, une saveur nostalgique s’en dégage. » Une saveur qui éclaire les parcours de deux garçons essayant « de se frayer un chemin vers un âge d’homme mystérieux et cependant si proche…, vers un ailleurs plus vaste que la vie immobile de leur petite ville… ».
