Le Pelléas et Mélisande opus 4 d’Arnold Schoenberg est l’une des nombreuses mises en musique du drame de Maurice Maeterlinck. Bien moins connu que l’opéra de Debussy ou que la musique de scène de Fauré, un peu plus cependant que la suite symphonique de Sibelius, ce poème symphonique encore très marqué par l’esprit de Richard Strauss et de Wagner ouvre cependant des horizons harmoniques nouveaux. Il n’y a donc rien d’étonnant à ce que les chefs versés dans le répertoire moderne et contemporain l’aient adopté tels Pierre Boulez, qui dirigeait l’œuvre en juin dernier avec l’Orchestre de l’Opéra, ou, ce soir, toujours à la Salle Pleyel, Peter Eötvös. Le chef hongrois dirige auparavant le rare Concerto pour violon du même Schoenberg, œuvre fortement expressive qu’a remarquablement enregistrée Hilary Hahn, soliste également pour ce concert.
