Avant-dernier opéra de Bellini, Beatrice di Tenda reste son opus le moins joué. À partir d’un épisode de l’histoire des Ducs de Milan, l’ouvrage, qui signera la rupture du compositeur avec son librettiste Romani, cristallise au rang de martyre le destin d’une aristocrate du XVème siècle injustement accusée de trahison, torturée et condamnée à mort. Une telle dénonciation des excès tyranniques ne saurait échapper à Peter Sellars, qui aborde pour la première fois le répertoire italien, et révélera l’acuité contemporaine, sinon intemporelle de ce drame belcantiste, dans un décor en acier massif dessiné par George Tsypin. Sous la baguette de Mark Wigglersworth, Pene Pati, l’une des plus belles voix de ténor de la nouvelle génération, fera ses débuts à l’Opéra de Paris dans le rôle d’Orombello, seigneur de Vintimille secrètement amoureux de l’héroïne éponyme, confiée à Tamara Wilson, aux côtés de son frère Amitai Pati, à qui seront dévolues les apparitions de Anichino.
