Qu’est-ce que l’adaptation au théâtre peut, selon vous, apporter au roman de Fedor Dostoïevski ?
Peter Stein : Grâce à la densification et la concentration, je pense que le théâtre peut renforcer les émotions que l’auteur a voulu susciter, ainsi qu’en intensifier le contenu.
En quoi Les Démons est-elle – comme vous l’avez déclaré – l’œuvre la plus politique écrite par Fedor Dostoïevski ?
P. St. : Dans Les Démons, l’auteur ne se contente pas de décrire d’une manière visionnaire, en anticipant sur ce qui se passera 50 ans plus tard en Russie et ailleurs, les retombées et les conséquences de la dissolution d’un ordre ancien marqué par des valeurs religieuses. Il crée, à travers la figure de Stavroguine, un personnage qui incarne les problèmes de l’époque post-idéologique, c’est-à-dire l’indifférence totale et le vide intérieur, tant spirituel que moral, l’interchangeabilité des valeurs, très difficile à vivre pour nos générations.
Pour adapter Les Démons à la scène, avez-vous tenté d’être le plus fidèle possible au roman de Fedor Dostoïevski, ou vous êtes-vous autorisé à en révéler une vision plus personnelle et plus intime ?
P. St. : Nous avons essayé de représenter le contenu, les personnages et la structure de ce roman, de la manière la plus fidèle possible, sans ajouter nos « idées » propres.

Finalement, quelle vision de cette œuvre souhaitez-vous transmettre au public, à travers votre spectacle ?
P. St. : Ce n’est pas une vision des Démons que nous voulons véhiculer, mais la nécessité, la difficulté et les erreurs qu’ont rencontrées, et que rencontrent encore, les individus qui bouleversent les choses, les individus qui donnent naissance à la nouveauté et, ainsi, à l’homme nouveau.
Quel cadre scénographique avez-vous élaboré pour ce spectacle ?
P. St. : Dans l’adaptation d’un roman, toute scénographie ou décor figé est interdit. L’espace de ce spectacle se résume donc à une superficie vide de 16 mètres sur 16 mètres, avec quelques meubles. C’est tout.
De façon plus générale, quels sont les principaux fondements sur lesquels repose votre théâtre, depuis 40 ans ?
P. St. : Mon théâtre repose sur ma curiosité de connaître des œuvres d’art, de les étudier et de transmettre la conception que j’en ai aux acteurs qui, eux-mêmes, la transmettent au public. Rien n’a changé en 40 ans.
Parmi toutes vos mises en scène, quelles sont celles qui vous semblent les plus importantes, les plus abouties ?
P. St. : Je pense que mes mises en scène allemande et russe de l’Orestie d’Eschyle font partie de mes travaux les plus importants. Ayant par le passé étudié le grec ancien et l’archéologie, je crois que ces spectacles m’ont permis de révéler la totalité de mes talents (s’ils existent). J’aurais, de toute façon, préféré être universitaire. Mais, pour cela, je crois que je manquais d’intelligence et de discipline.
