Stravinski voyait dans son Petrouchka « un pantin subitement déchaîné qui, par ses cascades d’arpèges diaboliques, exaspère l’orchestre, lequel, à son tour, lui réplique par des fanfares menaçantes. » De ce ballet orchestral, cette troupe de musiciens pas si classiques tire un spectacle intime où la musique de chambre se fait burlesque, joueuse et costumée, où les instruments d’orchestre répondent au piano-jouet ou au melodica. Comédiens, mimes, instrumentistes : une poignée de musiciens y joue tous les rôles.
Un exercice d’adaptation au-delà du concert
Entre conte fabuleux et folklore slave, la ballerine violoniste, le Maure hautboïste, et le héros malheureux, Petrouchka le violoncelliste, jouent un drame forain de fortune. Les trois pantins, animés par la flûte du mage, se retrouvent bientôt doués de vie, et donc d’amour, de désir, de méchanceté, de rivalité, de violence. Un décor frugal et quelques breloques bien senties suffisent à déplacer la petite scène par-delà le concert, dans un imaginaire où deux pantins se disputent une séduisante poupée, où le festif et le misérable se disputent la vedette. Une bagarre remportée par la musique.
