Film culte de Brian de Palma réinventant le mythe de Faust au cœur de l’univers musical des années 1970, Phantom of the Paradise fut un échec lors de sa sortie. Et pourtant, que de scènes saisissantes, à la fois déjantées, brillantes, et profondément mélancoliques ! Lorsque Swan (Paul Williams, qui composa la bande sonore), producteur adulé du label Death Records, inaugure le Paradise, nouveau palais du rock, il en profite pour s’emparer de la musique du compositeur Winslow Leach (William Finley), puis le fait arrêter et s’approprie l’élue de son cœur Phoenix (Jessica Harper). Les chansons Special to me et Old Souls de Phoenix sont une merveille. Emaillé de références cinématographiques et musicales diverses, librement inspiré par le roman de Gaston Leroux Le Fantôme de l’opéra, et par Le Portrait de Dorian Gray d’Oscar Wilde, le film est une dénonciation radicale des dérives d’une société du spectacle hystérique assoiffée de succès.
