« Le seul roi, c’est l’amour, et il règne sur moi », lance Phèdre. Se consumant d’une passion irrépressible pour Hippolyte, le fils de son époux (Thésée, roi d’Athènes), l’héroïne grecque ne peut lutter contre la véhémence de ses élans amoureux. Parmi les nombreux dramaturges ayant investi le chemin de cet amour dévastateur, se trouve Jean Racine, bien sûr, Euripide, Robert Garnier, mais aussi Sénèque. C’est la pièce de ce dernier que Julie Recoing a choisi de porter à la scène, dans le remarquable texte français de Florence Dupont (dont la version de Médée, du même auteur, sera prochainement présentée au Théâtre Nanterre-Amandiers par Zakariya Gouram). Cette très belle traduction — sensible, à la fois pointue et délicate, dénuée d’afféterie — est servie par des acteurs et une mise en scène manifestement désireux d’ancrer la tragédie antique dans notre époque, de rendre son éclat et sa puissance accessibles au plus grand nombre. Pour cela, Julie Recoing a élaboré un spectacle rythmé, contrasté, qui ne lésine ni sur les appels du pied comiques, ni sur les effets de jeu et de scénographie démonstratifs.
Une mise en scène en creux et pleins
D’un romantisme échevelé, balançant entre clairs et obscurs, cris et chuchotements, débordements et apaisements, cette représentation en creux et (surtout) en pleins envisage la tragédie de Sénèque comme le parcours d’une monstruosité héréditaire. Un parcours paroxystique qui s’inscrit dans les codes d’une modernité théâtrale conventionnelle : un peu de Mozart, un peu de Barry White ; beaucoup de pluie, beaucoup de guitare électrique ; une console de sonorisation, une mobylette… Usant de ces nombreuses facilités, la mise en scène de Julie Recoing conserve pourtant le mérite d’une grande netteté, d’une lisibilité scrupuleuse. Car s’il est dommage que cette vision de Phèdre n’échappe pas toujours au conformisme et à l’outrance, ne subjugue jamais réellement, elle permet néanmoins une bonne appréhension de la pièce. Passons donc sur les clichés pour retenir les moments de mesure et d’intériorité de Gretel Delattre (La Nourrice), d’Alexandra Castellon (Le Chœur), d’Anthony Paliotti (Le Messager), de Marie Desgranges (Phèdre) et de Thomas Blanchard (Thésée et Hippolyte). Passons sur les émotions qui ne parviennent pas véritablement à naître pour saisir la beauté péremptoire du texte de Sénèque.
