Fille d’un des juges des Enfers, Phèdre hérite de son père la vertu qui lui fait abhorrer son crime. Mais petite-fille du Soleil, elle est aussi marquée par la malédiction de sa race. Phèdre est victime des emportements incestueux qui lui font s’éprendre de celui qui, rejeton de l’Amazone et de Thésée, devrait à ses yeux valoir comme fils. Instrument du chaos, de la haine et de la destruction, Phèdre est en même temps la victime de cette déesse implacable, « tout entière à sa proie attachée ». Le sentiment de culpabilité naît de la contradiction entre la vertu du surmoi et le bouillonnement pulsionnel. A la fois vertueuse et exaltée, lucide et égarée, Phèdre pose la terrifiante question de la responsabilité du mal, et de la valeur du libre arbitre face au destin, et son corps torturé est le lieu de cette contradiction mortelle entre passion et raison. Fasciné, de son propre aveu, par les œuvres du répertoire, Christophe Rauck aborde la forme classique de leur écriture via la rigueur et la justesse musicale de l’alexandrin, avec la volonté d’une mise en scène au plus près des passions humaines, entre âmes déchirées et corps fiévreux.
