La redécouverte du répertoire et des instruments des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles a engendré de nouvelles pratiques d’interprétation, de nouveaux modes de jeu et, avant tout, de nouvelles façons de chanter. Les voix de contre-ténor ont aujourd’hui retrouvé l’importance qu’elles avaient à l’époque baroque. La douteuse mode des anciens castrats, très vendeuse et racoleuse, n’est pas pour rien dans cette ascension. Philippe Jaroussky est impressionnant dans ce genre de répertoire. Il possède en effet une présence vocale unique, reconnaissable dès les premières notes. Son timbre particulier lui permet de visiter des répertoires qui, avant lui, n’étaient pas explorés par les voix de contre-ténor, comme en témoigne son disque Opium consacré à la mélodie française. Au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, il s’attaquera à une sélection d’airs du compositeur vénitien Caldara.
