Le nom de ce jeune directeur musical sonne familièrement aux oreilles du public de l’Opéra de Paris : souvent son père, le grand Armin Jordan (1932-2006), a émerveillé par la finesse poétique de ses interprétations de Mozart (Les Noces de Figaro, La Flûte enchantée) ou de Wagner (sublime Parsifal mis en scène par Graham Vick en 1997). Il n’est pas toujours évident, dans ces conditions, de se faire un prénom. Cependant, quand, âgé de trente ans à peine, il dirige pour la première fois les musiciens de l’Opéra, dans Ariane à Naxos de Richard Strauss en 2004, il est déjà l’un des plus prometteurs parmi les chefs de la jeune génération, aguerri par un très rigoureux apprentissage auprès des théâtres lyriques d’Allemagne et d’Autriche. Durant ces années, il côtoie notamment Daniel Barenboïm au Staatsoper de Berlin et surtout concrétise sa passion pour la scène et pour tout ce qui concerne la voix.
Sa nomination comme directeur musical par le nouveau « patron » de l’Opéra national de Paris, Nicolas Joël, a pu surprendre. Devenant le benjamin des chefs d’orchestre en poste à Paris, Philippe Jordan a voulu marquer les esprits dès sa première saison avec le Ring de Wagner (qu’il poursuivra cette saison avec Siegfried en mars et Le Crépuscule des dieux en juin) : « il fallait une œuvre forte pour commencer à influer sur l’orchestre » déclarait-il à la veille de prendre ses fonctions.
Varier les expressions, de Mozart à Puccini
L’an dernier, Philippe Jordan a commencé à afficher ses goûts musicaux dans des programmes symphoniques éclectiques avec l’Orchestre de l’Opéra (Britten, Ligeti, Schumann, Strauss…), tandis qu’il poursuivait avec l’Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France un passionnant cycle réunissant Beethoven et Bartók. Désormais libéré de ses fonctions au Staatsoper de Berlin, il s’investit pleinement cette année dans la programmation lyrique, tant à l’Opéra Bastille qu’au Palais Garnier. Le choix de sa première production cette saison n’a pas été laissé au hasard : Le Triptyque de Puccini (en octobre à l’Opéra Bastille) est rarement programmé en tant que tel (Gianni Schicchi, le dernier de ces trois opéras en un acte, avait certes été présenté en mars 2004 à Garnier), mais surtout il donne l’occasion au chef de travailler trois univers expressifs à la fois proches et différents. Philippe Jordan retrouvera l’ouvrage de ses débuts à Bastille, Ariane à Naxos, en décembre. Il sera également dans la fosse pour deux productions inusables des opéras de Mozart et Da Ponte : Les Noces de Figaro de Giorgio Strehler (à Bastille à partir du 26 octobre) et le Così fan tutte d’Ezio Toffolutti sur lequel se refermera la saison du Palais Garnier en juin et juillet.
