Qu’est-ce qui relie les cinq textes présentés dans la salle des Abbesses du théâtre de la Ville ?
Philippe Minyana : D’abord la thématique. A travers tous ces textes, j’ai eu envie d’interroger les notions de périples et de retrouvailles. Tous ont donc un rapport avec quelque chose de l’intime, avec les rêves, les souvenirs…Et puis, tous correspondent à une forme nouvelle – le théâtre récit – sur laquelle j’ai commencé à travailler lorsque la Comédie-Française m’a commandé une adaptation d’un extrait des Métamorphoses d’Ovide (ndlr, Les Métamorphoses – La Petite dans la forêt profonde, mis en scène par Marcial Di Fonzo Bo, en 2008, au Théâtre de Gennevilliers puis au Studio Théâtre de la Comédie-Française). Il s’agit d’une forme d’écriture au sein de laquelle la didascalie est considérée comme un élément de récit.
L’expérimentation occupe une place importante dans votre théâtre…
Ph. M. : Oui, une place fondamentale. Je suis comme un artisan qui travaille à son établi, sans arrêt en recherche, sans arrêt en réflexion. Savoir ce qu’est l’écriture, ce qu’on en fait, quelle forme on lui donne… Toutes ces questions me passionnent. Il s’agit d’un champ d’investigation inépuisable. Evidemment, parallèlement à tout cela, mes textes racontent des histoires. Mais le plus important a toujours été pour moi de trouver comment les raconter, comment les travailler. Et comme je suis un lecteur effréné, une forme de porosité s’est créée entre la littérature et moi-même. Je suis imbibé de cette matière, de ces mouvements que forment les mots assemblés.

Quels auteurs dramatiques ont été, pour vous, particulièrement importants ?
Ph. M. : Michel Vinaver, par exemple. Lorsque j’ai été acteur, dire du Vinaver a été pour moi une véritable révélation. Mon corps a alors compris que pour dire cette écriture, un rythme était nécessaire, qu’il fallait constituer une partition. J’ai compris à ce moment-là que le théâtre, c’est du son et du rythme, qui font sens. Après Michel Vinaver, des auteurs comme Botho Strauss, Peter Handke, Thomas Bernhard… ont également agi comme des révélateurs. En s’éloignant radicalement de l’anecdote, ces auteurs ont tous interrogé la représentation des comportements humains. Il y a aussi, bien sûr, Anton Tchekhov, qui a défini un nouveau cadre pour l’artiste de théâtre. A travers eux, j’ai compris qu’il ne faut jamais traiter un sujet mais un thème.
Quelle différence faites-vous entre ces deux notions ?
Ph. M. : Le sujet, c’est la morale, les sentiments, le compassionnel… Il s’agit d’un endroit d’exploitation assez limité. Le thème, au contraire, offre un domaine beaucoup plus vaste. C’est comme une piste de ski que l’on dévale, une piste sur laquelle peuvent se jouer toutes sortes de choses. Les thèmes que j’interroge sont souvent des thèmes génériques : le périple, la visite, les retrouvailles, la réconciliation…
Des thèmes qui sont traversés par un travail profond sur la langue. Comment pourriez-vous caractériser « votre langue » ?
Ph. M. : Elle est faite de deux bruits : le premier accueille le grotesque, le second recueille le funèbre. C’est la mise en présence de ces deux dimensions qui fait que les choses deviennent vraies. Je ne parle pas ici d’une volonté de reproduction, d’imitation ou d’illustration, mais de l’émergence d’une réalité qui déborde, qui va voir dans l’entre-deux des choses, du côté des bordures, des zones ombreuses.
Jusqu’à, parfois, emprunter au merveilleux…
Ph. M. : Oui, certains de mes textes sont des fables, des contes. Au théâtre, le réel n’existe évidemment pas. C’est une illusion. Mes pièces se composent de bribes de réel, d’un réel discontinu, d’un réel par effraction. Pour moi, ce qu’il y a de plus réel dans l’écriture, ce sont les évocations que produit l’assemblage des mots.
Quel mouvement votre écriture a-t-elle suivi, depuis vos débuts dans les années 1970 jusqu’à aujourd’hui ?
Ph. M. : Un mouvement qui va du maximalisme au minimalisme. J’ai réduit l’espace de mes textes, j’ai resserré le cadre et je l’ai déplacé. D’une certaine façon, mon travail se rapproche aujourd’hui de celui du photographe Gregory Crewdson, c’est-à-dire d’un travail visant à réaliser des instantanés, des vignettes : quelqu’un qui attend, quelqu’un qui traverse une route, quelqu’un qui regarde au loin, quelqu’un qui ne fait rien… Si on regarde bien certaines scènes de nos existences, si on les regarde longtemps et de près, elles deviennent étranges. C’est cette étrangeté que je souhaite faire surgir à l’intérieur de mes textes.
