De l’aveu de Jean Jourdheuil, qui a traduit en français avec Jean-Louis Besson le texte de Müller, la première difficulté tient à cet exercice littéraire qui doit rendre « l’extrême tension du vers, la prosodie improbable de Heiner Müller (…) l’un des derniers grands écrivains à avoir « pensé » en vers. » La deuxième difficulté est celle des rapports entretenus par l’auteur avec l’œuvre poétique de Brecht de la tutelle duquel Müller s’est émancipé avec Philoctète. Troisième difficulté, celle de la mise en scène, que Jourdheuil conçoit comme une « stratégie de l’imprévisible ». Tels sont aussi les épreuves des personnages de la pièce : Philoctète doit retrouver la langue des hommes après n’avoir parlé qu’aux pierres de Lemnos pendant dix ans, Néoptolème doit se dépêtrer de la tutelle d’Ulysse et résoudre le conflit entre deux loyautés et Ulysse lui-même doit utiliser ses mille ruses en utilisant comme arme le fils d’Achille pour récupérer l’arc de son père. Autant dire que si la mise en scène de cette pièce trouve solution, celle-ci éclairera le conflit grec qui lui sert d’objet !
