Kurtag appartient à la génération d’une avant-garde pour laquelle l’opéra était un genre du passé. Créé à La Scala de Milan en novembre 2018, Fin de partie, premier opus lyrique d’un compositeur de 92 ans, est le fruit d’une très longue gestation, les réticences des ayant-droits de Beckett n’ayant guère facilité la concrétisation d’un projet auquel pensait sans doute le compositeur hongrois dès la découverte, dans sa jeunesse, de l’œuvre du dramaturge. Sur un livret qui réduit la pièce à un peu plus de la moitié, sans jamais la réécrire, l’ouvrage déploie tout l’art inimitable de l’épure expressive de Kurtag, qui tend à se diluer un peu au fil des deux heures de la partition. C’est dans la production de la création, réglée par Pierre Audi, et avec les mêmes interprètes, sous la baguette de Markus Stenz, que Paris découvrira l’unique opéra de l’un des derniers géants de la musique de la seconde moitié du vingtième siècle.
