S’appuyant sur le large effectif offert par l’Ensemble Modern Orchestra, l’un des meilleurs ensembles dédiés à la musique contemporaine, aux dimensions symphoniques, le compositeur et chef d’orchestre revisite deux œuvres-clés de la modernité musicale. Amériques d’Edgard Varèse (1920-1929) porte à sa manière la révolution musicale du début du xxe siècle en une sorte de chant urbain d’une puissance sonore extrême soutenue par onze percussionnistes. Dans ses propres Notations (1978-1998), cinq pièces de jeunesse pour piano transposées pour grand orchestre, Pierre Boulez crée des climats sonores complexes et séduisants à travers une écriture très individualisée. Entre ces deux œuvres, l’orchestre interprète trois partitions de compositeurs de la jeune génération, les Allemands Matthias Pintscher et Enno Poppe et le Français Mark André, tous soucieux de prolonger la tradition symphonique en l’orientant vers des voies nouvelles.
