La présence de Mozart au programme d’un concert donné par Pierre Boulez avec l’Ensemble intercontemporain a de quoi surprendre au premier abord. C’est oublier que ses fonctions de directeur musical, à l’Orchestre philharmonique de New York ou à l’Orchestre symphonique de la BBC, ont amené Pierre Boulez à diriger le répertoire classique, tout en soulignant la continuité des héritages musicaux. C’est particulièrement vrai pour ce programme qui rassemble la Sérénade « Gran Partita » de Mozart et le Concerto de chambre de Berg. Au-delà des quelque cent quarante ans qui séparent les deux œuvres, les similitudes ne manquent pas : les treize instruments à vents requis bien sûr, mais aussi le rôle de l’œuvre dans le rapport aux formes héritées. Pour sa vaste sérénade, composée pour les virtuoses de l’orchestre de Mannheim, Mozart évacue toute concession galante ; quant à Berg, en romantique accompli, il utilise le strict cadre formel du concerto pour déployer une expression extrêmement puissante.
