D’Incises (1994) à sur Incises (1998), quatre années seulement se sont écoulées. Mais, entre la pièce brève composée pour le concours de piano Umberto Micheli de Milan au diptyque pour trois pianos, trois harpes et trois percussions-claviers offert à Paul Sacher pour ses quatre-vingt-dix ans, c’est toute la vision de la création musicale selon Pierre Boulez qui se fait jour. Le compositeur revendiquait, à l’occasion de l’exposition que vient de lui consacrer le Musée du Louvre, une esthétique du fragment. Ainsi sur Incises est-il une expérience de décomposition et recomposition de la pièce originelle mais aussi du son du piano lui-même. Dans son Concerto pour clarinette (1996), Eliott Carter décompose quant à lui l’orchestre en groupes homogènes répondant tour à tour au soliste.
