Pianiste reconnu de la scène hexagonale, Pierre de Bethmann développe depuis plusieurs années une thématique de compositeur qu’il a déclinée au sein de différents formats orchestraux, dont la forme la plus spectaculaire est son Medium Ensemble. Cet ensemble de douze musiciens est plus léger qu’un big band traditionnel mais il en conserve la diversité de pupitres et de timbres auxquels le chef intègre, en outre, une voix féminine et un cor, histoire d’élargir encore la palette. D’une écriture moderne et nerveuse, les compositions — dont Pierre de Bethmann présente une nouvelle série qui sort également sur un album intitulé « Exo » — dessinent des architectures complexes sans être obscures, habitées par la présence de solistes de premier plan, à commencer par son leader. Un très bel orchestre.
