Depuis plus de six ans, Pierre de Bethmann pilote un trio composé de Sylvain Romano et Tony Rabeson pour aborder un large répertoire de standards. Une fois de plus, dans ce nouveau disque, le pianiste se plait à emprunter à des traditions musicales très différentes, s’éloignant volontiers des trésors du Great American Songbook, pour aller musarder ailleurs, par exemple du côté de Schumann et de sa Sonate pour violon et piano opus 105, de Georges Brassens ou encore de Stevie Wonder. Avec, pour exception qui confirme la règle, Easy to Love de Cole Porter… « Nous avons remarqué qu’il y avait la grande tradition des standards du jazz mais aussi d’autres choses auxquelles on pouvait essayer de se « frotter », comme la chanson française ou le répertoire classique. On marche sur des œufs, car c’est très compliqué de se les approprier… mais je m’y attelle avec le même état d’esprit, au fond, que l’on pouvait avoir lorsque la musique de l’industrie musicale américaine des années 1920 et 1930, qui n’est pas si éloignée du classique, a été transformée en standards par le jazz. » explique le pianiste.
