Le directeur de la Cité de la musique, Laurent Bayle, a eu l’idée judicieuse de programmer dans le même concert des œuvres de Rameau (extraits de Zaïs et de Hippolyte et Aricie) et de Grisey (Partiels et Modulations). Tout d’abord car ces deux compositeurs, en dépit des plus de 200 ans qui les séparent, ont de nombreux points communs, en particulier dans leur approche de la couleur instrumentale. Rameau a révolutionné l’orchestre en y intégrant de nouveaux instruments tandis que Grisey interroge, dans ses recherches spectrales, l’essence même du son au moyen de procédés technologiques. En confrontant un ensemble sur instruments anciens, Le Concert français du bouillonnant claveciniste Pierre Hantaï, et une formation spécialisée en musique contemporaine, l’Ensemble intercontemporain dirigé par Susanna Mälkki, la programmation montre aussi qu’au-delà de la différence d’instrumentarium, c’est le même esprit engagé qui habite les deux « camps ».
