Publié quelques mois après L’Étranger, en octobre 1942 dans une Europe en guerre, Le Mythe de Sisyphe s’inscrit dans un ensemble d’œuvres qu’Albert Camus nomme « Le Cycle de l’absurde ». Dans cet essai, il s’oppose à une pensée philosophique dominante aux XIXème et XXème siècles, selon laquelle l’absurdité de la condition humaine pose la question du suicide. Pour en proposer une adaptation théâtrale – la première jamais réalisée – le comédien et metteur en scène Pierre Martot s’associe avec son complice le metteur en scène Jean-Claude Fall. Dans le rôle-titre, il nous invite à suivre le chemin de pensée proposé par l’auteur.
La passion de l’absurde
Entièrement fidèle aux mots du livre, Le Mythe de Sisyphe de Pierre Martot donne chair à la réflexion d’Albert Camus à travers trois figures : l’acteur, « l’homme révolté » et l’écrivain. Il cherche ainsi à mettre en partage « le mouvement de la pensée qui conduit du sentiment de l’absurdité à la passion d’exister ». Sur un plateau nu ou presque, il est un homme qui marche depuis l’obscurité jusqu’à une « clarté blanche qui éclaire chaque objet dans la lumière de l’intelligence », jusqu’à une forme de joie. Incarnant la « philosophie sensible » d’Albert Camus, le comédien entend dire la nécessité d’interroger le sens de l’existence pour le renouveler.
