Dans vos précédentes créations, les mots surgissaient des corps en mouvement, sur le plateau. Là, vous vous emparez pour la première fois de paroles déposées par une autre sur la page. Qu’avez-vous ressenti à la lecture ?
La force d’une matière concrète, dense, qui vous attrape, ne lâche pas, comme si les mots sautaient à la figure. C’est une traversée existentielle, poétique, pour parler magnifiquement de l’approche de la mort et du désir de rester vivant. Annie Zadek travaille longtemps ses textes. Elle cisèle les phrases jusqu’à toucher l’épure, jusqu’à parvenir aux sensations, de plus de plus ténues, de cet homme assailli par des questions, des souvenirs, des contradictions, dans ses derniers moments.
Vivant montre aussi un homme face à la création, dévorante et nécessaire.
Cet artiste-là n’est pas apaisé. La création est une nécessité, déraisonnable, organique comme la soif, au point de sacrifier à l’écriture son existence et son rapport aux autres. Et cette exigence est cruelle, sans concession. Elle fait sentir les arrangements perpétuels, insatisfaisants forcément et forcément inévitables parce que la solitude complète serait invivable. La vie est dans ce déchirement, dans l’oscillation entre des pôles opposés, qui attirent et repoussent. Rien n’est résolu dans la pièce. Annie Zadek ne nie pas la complexité, ne la simplifie pas. Elle la dévoile. Elle montre cet homme en combat, non pour réconcilier ses contraires, mais pour arriver à vivre avec. L’existence, c’est faire avec ce qui nous déchire, plus que de rêver à une cohabitation apaisée.
Le texte tresse plusieurs voix, lignes narratives et niveaux de langue. Il prend sens aussi par sa disposition dans le cadre de la page. Comment abordez-vous le travail scénique ?
J’ai travaillé avec la matière, le concret de la langue. C’est le texte qui bouge. L’énergie est impulsée par l’acteur. Tout autre mouvement devient redondant, inutile. Les espaces vides dans la page donnent des indications musicales qui ouvrent des suspensions, des silences, pour laisser résonner les phrases, le non dit, pour apprécier l’infime vibration des mots, si infime qu’ils en acquièrent une toute autre importance… prononcés pas un homme qui s’éteint. Ça devient essentiel. Le texte compose ainsi une partition où surviennent des pensées, tels des traits d’instruments qui joueraient un concert intérieur désordonné. L’acteur doit trouver la dynamique rythmique, le tempo juste.

Il était là, par le geste d’écriture d’Annie Zadek. Mais la mise en scène évite la reconstitution ou l’évocation explicite.
Julie Sicard accompagne Hervé Pierre, votre complice de longue date, dans ce monologue. Pourquoi avez-vous introduit cette présence féminine ?
Peut-être pour ne pas laisser cet homme seul avec la mort, pour apporter une présence lumineuse dans cette noirceur. Fille, femme maîtresse, passagère, infirmière… elle peut représenter différentes figures féminines. C’est la vie qui continue.
