Le sport de haut niveau (il fut spécialiste du 400 mètres et du 400 mètres haies), l’économie mathématique (qu’il étudia à l’université), le cinéma (il est titulaire d’un DEA obtenu à l’Ecole Supérieure d’Audiovisuel de Toulouse) : le chemin de Pierre Rigal ne semblait pas tout tracé pour le mener à la chorégraphie. Et pourtant ! La dépense physique, la réflexion sur la société contemporaine, les références et les modes de composition cinématographiques sont des composantes essentielles du « phénomène Rigal ». Au cours de ses années d’études, il rencontre les chorégraphes Heddy Maalem, Bernardo Montet, Wim Vandekeybus, ou le metteur en scène Mladen Materic, particulièrement sensible à l’implication du corps dans le théâtre. Et l’année de ses 29 ans (2002), alors qu’il a commencé à travailler comme réalisateur de vidéo-clips et de documentaires, Pierre Rigal est engagé en tant que danseur par Gilles Jobin. Dès l’année suivante, il fonde sa propre compagnie et mène de front les activités d’interprète et de chorégraphe, avec la complicité de plusieurs collaborateurs, notamment le metteur en scène Aurélien Bory.
Le conteur des odyssées de la vie quotidienne
Erection (2003) repose sur une simple consigne : passer de la position couchée à la position debout. De cette contrainte, Pierre Rigal fait un voyage infini, entre des étages et des états multiples, sans cesse à redécouvrir. Le ton est donné : la danse de Pierre Rigal sera à la fois minimaliste et athlétique, radicale et nécessitant un engagement corporel sans faille. Elle séduit aussi bien les amateurs de danse attentifs aux démarches les plus exigeantes que les publics habituellement réfractaires à la danse contemporaine. Il crée ensuite Arrêts de jeu, qui revisite ses souvenirs de téléspectateur de matches de football… Avant de livrer en 2008, avec le solo Press, une réflexion magistrale sur la condition de l’homme moderne, enfermé dans une pièce de plus en plus étroite. En 2009, nouveau défi : suite à une commande de Suresnes cités danse, il crée Asphalte pour cinq danseurs hip-hop. « Venant du sport, je me sentais des affinités avec ces danseurs familiers de la performance, de la compétition… », explique le chorégraphe, en toute simplicité. Début février, l’Onde propose une série de représentations d’Erection, Press et Asphalte : l’occasion de réinterroger le cheminement artistique de cet amoureux des prouesses du corps, sous toutes leurs coutures.
