Quelle est l’origine du projet ?
Pierre Roullier : Caroline Gautier avait envie depuis longtemps de monter un opéra autour des Contes du chat perché de Marcel Aymé. Elle a proposé ce projet à Jean-Marc Singier, qui a immédiatement été séduit par ce récit non pas naïf mais très dessiné, avec cette ambiance jurassienne assez austère, les parents très sévères… Et, de fait, cela va bien avec le genre d’humour de Jean-Marc Singier, qui a une écriture assez caractéristique, très colorée, très inventive rythmiquement. Comme le dit joliment Gérard Pesson, il y a du Tinguely dans la musique de Jean-Marc Singier.
À quel moment 2e2m a-t-il été associé au projet ?
P. R. : Jean-Marc est un compositeur que l’on suit depuis longtemps et qui connaît bien l’ensemble. Surtout, il a assisté à des spectacles où les musiciens n’étaient pas seulement derrière leur pupitre. Or, en tant que directeur artistique, j’ai envie de creuser ces pistes-là, à travers des projets avec des chorégraphes ou dans le domaine du théâtre musical (Mare Nostrum de Kagel ou Cantatrix Sopranica d’Arnaud Petit d’après Georges Perec). La participation des musiciens y est envisagée dès la conception du spectacle : ils ne doivent pas intervenir comme une bande sonore vivante, mais participer à la dramaturgie. Pour Chat perché, Caroline Gautier et Jean-Marc Singier ont d’abord cherché à bien visualiser ce qu’ils pouvaient demander à chacun des musiciens.

Comment les instrumentistes de 2e2m interviennent-ils sur scène ?
P. R. : Ils ont un double rôle. Ils sont les membres de la fanfare de ce coin du Jura, avec leur costume très « début de siècle », très « Petit Chose » – et moi, je suis chef de fanfare, avec quelques galons de plus. Mais ils incarnent aussi les animaux de la ferme, en une sorte de chœur antique à la fois instrumental, scénique et vocal (puisque, dans Chat perché, ce sont les animaux qui portent la narration, le parcours dramatique de l’opéra). Pour créer leurs personnages, Caroline Gautier et Jean-Marc Singier sont vraiment partis des musiciens, de leur physique, de leur voix autant que de leurs instruments.
L’œuvre est donc vraiment écrite pour les musiciens de 2e2m.
P. R. : Oui, les musiciens ont dû s’intégrer à l’économie globale du spectacle, aux côtés des autres artistes : chanteurs (le contre-ténor Robert Expert fera le paon, le ténor Marc Molomot jouera le cochon et la colorature Sonia Bellugi le canard), mais aussi comédien, danseur, contorsionnistes. Tous ont été choisis en commun, par Caroline, Jean-Marc, le chorégraphe Dominique Boivin et moi. C’est vraiment un travail en synergie.
Cela peut-il changer la pratique du concert ?
P. R. : Cela change la vision que l’ensemble a d’un concert. Les musiciens se font alors une représentation individuelle et globale complètement différente de l’occupation de l’espace. Dès lors, le geste d’aller vers le public, d’être en représentation n’est plus le même. Quand un instrumentiste joue à côté d’un danseur, d’un chanteur ou d’un comédien, il ressent l’énergie qui émane de cette personne. Le son instrumental peut avoir cette qualité-là, mais il faut pour cela l’habiter autrement. En retour, le regard du spectateur sur la musique en train de se faire change aussi totalement.
