Les suites de Bach ne pouvaient pas être ignorées par le cycle « Back to Bach » du Musée d’Orsay qui éclaire la figure musicale du Cantor à la lumière des Romantiques qui l’ont redécouverte au XIXème siècle. Dans cette œuvre immense, la résurrection des Six Suites pour violoncelle, aujourd’hui encore considérées comme le Nirvana de la littérature de l’instrument, durent attendre pour rayonner dans le monde la stature d’un interprète au génie visionnaire, Pablo Casals (qui avait découvert l’œuvre en 1890 à l’âge de 14 ans et attendit 10 ans avant de les jouer en public). Depuis, dans le sillage du violoncelliste catalan, les meilleurs violoncellistes n’ont cessé de se confronter au chef-d‘œuvre avec un inextinguible sentiment de crainte et d’excitation. Parmi ceux-ci, le hollandais Pieter Wispelwey (né en 1962) n’est pas le plus avare car il a déjà livré au disque trois versions différentes. La dernière gravée en septembre 2012 frappe par son audace, sa vitalité très expressionniste et son choix de réglage de l’instrument (baroque) à un diapason très bas, celui en vigueur selon les scientifiques dans le contexte où elles ont été composées en 1716, qui confère à la sonorité de l’instrument un surcroît de profondeur et de sensualité… Une très grande personnalité du violoncelle, rare en concert à Paris.
