Pourquoi choisir d’évoquer la mort ?
Pippo Delbono : Nous avons l’habitude de ne pas en parler, de la considérer comme une chose qu’on ne peut pas connaître, noire et obscure, alors qu’elle est quelque chose qui appartient à la vie, un événement qui passe dans notre histoire. C’est aussi une question de culture. En Italie par exemple, la mort est liée à cette obscurité, à la question de ce qui se passe après, à celle du paradis et de l’enfer. Nous sommes conditionnés à la considérer comme quelque chose qu’on attend et non pas comme un continuum de la vie. En Occident, étonnamment, la mort n’est pas omniprésente et pourtant notre société est triste : on le voit dans les yeux des gens. En Inde, en Birmanie, en Afrique, on sent la vie et la joie beaucoup plus qu’en Europe et pourtant la mort est partout.
Ce thème suppose-t-il un traitement théâtral particulier ?
P. D. : Il n’y a pas de cris, pas de violence dans ce spectacle. Je ne descends pas dans la salle non plus, contrairement à d’habitude. J’ai senti la nécessité d’un voile entre nous et le public et un besoin de pudeur pour raconter cette histoire. Le thème est en lui-même plein de force et j’ai senti le besoin de trouver la couleur d’une poésie plus douce. Quand je fais un spectacle, je ne cherche pas une idée précise ; je cherche plutôt à me libérer la tête. Je chante une nécessité profonde plus qu’une pensée. Dans un voyage qui va vers ce thème-là, c’est la vie, le corps qui donnent l’énergie. Je suis anti-rationaliste au théâtre : je peux répondre au comment d’un spectacle mais pas à son pourquoi. Pourquoi est une question qui me fait peur. Je ne sais pas pourquoi les choses, ni pourquoi je fais un spectacle. Quand il y a beaucoup de pourquoi, on ne comprend plus rien du tout ! Quand on aborde un thème aussi profond, on doit se débarrasser du pourquoi et se mettre dans une écoute poétique : c’est de là qu’est venue la nécessité de l’intimité et de ne pas crier. Il y a un temps pour être violent et un temps pour être doux, leurs motivations sont différentes.

Comment abordez-vous ce temps de la douceur ?
P. D. : Par la danse ; je dois beaucoup à l’expérience de la danse. Dans ce spectacle, j’ai voulu des solos de danse, pour arriver à retrouver le besoin de parler seulement avec la danse et remettre le corps à l’ouvrage. Lorsque j’ai participé à l’Ecole des Maîtres, je me suis retrouvé avec des comédiens sortant des différents conservatoires d’Europe. Ils étaient morts physiquement ! Le théâtre est trop devenu un théâtre de la tête. Avec eux, j’ai travaillé des heures sur la danse. Ça a été très important pour moi aussi car ça m’a permis de me retrouver dans mon corps. Il y a des choses qu’on ne peut pas affronter seulement avec les paroles, des choses mystérieuses, qui supposent une chorégraphie sans pourquoi, inscrite seulement dans la qualité du mouvement.

P. D. : Les Récits de juin est une sorte de double de Questo buio feroce, un double autobiographique. Je suis seul en scène et je raconte la façon dont je suis entré dans le théâtre, comment la vie m’a donné et pris des choses et comment le théâtre est lié à la vie. Les Récits de juin racontent quelqu’un qui n’a pas peur de raconter ce qu’il est. Ce spectacle est douloureux et pourtant il fait rire. Questo buio feroce recherche davantage la joie que le rire. Je ne peux pas rire sur la mort des autres mais je dois commencer à rire sur moi, metteur en scène, artiste, homme. C’est là que commence l’ironie vraie qui permet de retrouver la joie sur sa propre mort. Tout doit commencer là car la révolution commence par soi-même : il est inutile de vouloir révolutionner le dehors si on n’a pas le courage de changer soi-même.
