« Dans Place du marché 76, j’ai imaginé un petit village, au centre de l’Europe, et une place du marché, lieu public où se poseraient tous les problèmes d’une société multiculturelle. Frappée par des catastrophes en série, cette communauté voit son équilibre vaciller. Surgit alors tout ce qui était caché, refoulé, mais aussi ce qui fait notre humanité. » C’est ce que Jan Lauwers confia à nos colonnes lors du Festival d’Avignon 2013 où fut présentée la pièce. Cette place du marché est donc selon lui une métaphore de l’Europe et de ses maux, de la précarité au rejet de l’étranger. Sorte de Monsieur Loyal arpentant le plateau micro en main, le metteur en scène assume l’artifice théâtral, informe le public et plante le décor. Plombée par les drames, la communauté villageoise – qui commémore en début de parcours la tragédie d’une explosion qui a tué vingt-quatre personnes – expérimente toutes sortes de tragédies. Ce carnaval de l’horreur macabre et grotesque, d’une grande force visuelle, exige beaucoup des comédiens. Un cabaret en forme de chaos spectaculaire et symptomatique.
