Elle lance un geste à la volée, il vibre de tout son être, elle claque le sol, déchire l’air d’une vive étreinte ou se glisse dans l’ombre de son corps, il répond d’une espiègle circonvolution, se dérobe en quelques pas de côté… Elle, c’est Shantala Shivalingappa, experte en kuchipudi, danse traditionnelle du Sud-Est de l’Inde, et interprète lumineuse dans plusieurs productions de Pina Bausch. Lui, c’est Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, danseur tout en féline souplesse et nerveuses impulsions, chorégraphe alliant volontiers les différences en saisissants hiatus. Insatiable arpenteur du monde en quête des cultures de l’ailleurs, il aime à dérouter son mouvement au contact de l’autre, partager la scène et se frotter à la diversité des styles, qu’ils soit hip-hop, flamenco ou kathak. Les deux complices se sont rencontrés à Wupperthal en 2004, lors du festival organisé par la grande dame. Depuis, ils « jouent » ensemble…
Comment trouver le bonheur ?
En Inde, en Australie ou au Japon, ils se sont retrouvés au hasard de leurs tournées pour explorer toutes les facettes du jeu. De société ou de rôle, de composition, de genre ou de comédie, de séduction, d’enfants ou de masques… le jeu se décline ainsi en saynètes et duos, tantôt ludiques, tantôt sensuels ou batailleurs, au rythme des chants anciens de Patrizia Bovi et Gabriele Miracle. Embrassant les élans du désir et de la mort, Play tisse une question en filigrane : comment trouver le bonheur ? La méthode, en cinq points, est expliquée dans le spectacle…
