Pierre Maillet et Matthieu Cruciani ont créé cette pièce à partir de deux œuvres radicalement différentes mais traitant du même thème : le couple en crise, crise majeure laissant voir le complexe maelström des sentiments éprouvés lors de l’éclatement des tensions, laissant voir tout le désarroi, le ressentiment et même encore l’amour ressentis par les deux époux – pas forcément au même moment ni de la même façon. Tous deux sont voués à reconnaître leur inaptitude au bonheur et pour l’occasion, le comique et le tragique sont appelés à se rencontrer. La première partie reprend La Peur de coups de Georges Courteline, courte et percutante scène de ménage au retour d’un bal, où le mari reproche à sa femme la « cour scandaleuse » qu’un capitaine a entreprise. Le texte savoureux, implacable et cruel ne fait pas de cadeau. Suit un fragment du chef-d’oeuvre Scènes de la vie conjugale d’Ingmar Bergman, disséquant la vie de couple avec une redoutable précision et une lucidité amère.
Différentes distances aux choses
Réunir ces deux textes répond à la volonté d’une mise en jeu des contrastes, des différentes distances aux choses. Cependant, la multiplicité des matériaux d’une part et d’autre part l’amputation d’une large part de la chronique bergmanienne sur le couple de Marianne et Johan tendent à diluer l’acuité du propos dramatique. A trop exploser la linéarité de l’histoire, on en perd la sève et la profondeur, surtout que ce parti pris ne donne pas toute la mesure des étapes clés de la vie à deux et du rôle d’un protagoniste éminent dans le couple de Marianne et Johan : le temps. Sur la scène un vaste lit s’étend, habilement utilisé par la mise en scène. Malgré le jeu convaincant des comédiens, on assiste à une sorte de joute trop erratique, qui ne manque pas de finesse, mais oscille quasiment sans transition ni explication entre divers états et registres.
