Si l’un des ressorts de la tragédie classique est la chaîne des amours non partagées, il est bien présent dans Polyeucte, nom du seigneur arménien marié à Pauline, qui a dû renoncer à Sévère pour souscrire aux volontés de son père. Mais l’originalité de la pièce de Corneille, écrite en 1642, réside dans la puissance de l’amour pour Dieu, qui finit par surpasser, chez Polyeucte, l’amour des choses terrestres. Une foi telle qu’il va commettre un sacrilège, plaçant son beau-père Félix, le gouverneur romain d’Arménie dans un dilemme : faire preuve de clémence au risque d’être lui-même puni, ou sévir au risque de condamner son gendre à mort ? Rafaële Minnaert, qui met en scène cette pièce peu montée aujourd’hui, se demande en quoi la pièce peut encore nous parler. Pour elle, la tragédie de Corneille « ne nous dit pourtant pas autre chose que : l’amour peut tout. Si elle est la tragédie de la grâce, elle est aussi celle de la volonté libre » tandis que « la grandeur à première vue écrasante des héros de Polyeucte en fait des personnages inspirants pour notre temps. » Au moins deux bonnes raisons de découvrir sa mise en scène épurée à l’Espace Georges Bernanos.
