Théâtre des Abbesses / de Corneille / mes Brigitte Jaques-Wajeman
Dans l’Arménie du IIIème siècle, l’empereur persécute les Chrétiens et Polyeucte est promis au martyre. « Je vous aime », dit Polyeucte à Pauline, pour l’amour de laquelle il refuse de sacrifier sa foi : « Beaucoup moins que mon Dieu, mais bien plus que moi-même ». Brigitte Jaques-Wajeman continue son exploration de l’œuvre de Corneille avec cette tragédie « dont la violence iconoclaste angoisse autant qu’elle fascine ». Dans cette tragédie ténébreuse et cruelle, « des jeunes gens se découvrent eux-mêmes capables d’actes effrayants contre les forces de l’amour, quitte à les sacrifier », dit la metteur en scène, qui insiste sur le caractère plurivoque des lectures de la pièce, qui peut néanmoins nous éclairer sur les forces obscures à l’œuvre dans le désir dévorant, qui peut vouloir parfois aller jusqu’à vouloir ce qui le tue…
