Dramaturge, mais aussi critique théâtrale, pédagogue et scénariste, Ximena Escalante est, à 46 ans, l’une des figures majeures du paysage théâtral mexicain contemporain. Auteure de nombreuses pièces à travers lesquelles elle revisite les mythes fondateurs de la culture universelle pour scruter le quotidien de ses concitoyens, Ximena Escalante interroge les thématiques de l’amour, de la passion et des conflits que ces sentiments peuvent entraîner. C’est en 2005, lors d’un chantier ayant pour thème la figure de Phèdre réalisé au Nouveau Théâtre du 8e (« Dix Phèdre, d’Euripide à nos jours »), que Sylvie Mongin-Algan a découvert cette écriture. « Je me suis passionnée pour sa pièce, Phèdre et autres Grecques, déclare la metteure en scène. Ximena Escalante et moi avons fait connaissance quatre ans après ce chantier, à l’occasion d’une rencontre organisée, au Salon du Livre, autour de son écriture et de la mise en théâtre que j’avais proposée de son texte. Puis, nous nous sommes revues chez elle, à Mexico, lors d’un voyage organisé par Culturesfrance. L’évidente similitude de notre questionnement théâtral, nos explorations respectives des grandes figures mythiques, m’ont donné envie de poursuivre l’aventure en sa compagnie. » C’est cette année, en 2011, à l’occasion de l’Année du Mexique en France, que Sylvie Mongin-Algan a choisi de continuer son travail sur cette œuvre.
La juxtaposition de quatre singularités
Elle le fait à travers un polyptyque théâtral composé de quatre pièces, ramenant ainsi à notre contemporanéité les figures d’Electre (Electre se réveille), d’Andromaque (Andromaca real), de Phèdre (Phèdre et autres Grecques) et de Salomé (Moi aussi je veux un prophète). C’est avec ce dernier texte que débutera le Polyptyque Escalante, à partir du 12 février. Un texte qui — de la guerre des cartels de la drogue (qui a fait de la décapitation une pratique courante au Mexique), aux « vieilles figures de séductrices » que représentent Salomé et Judith — établit des liens entre le désir et cette forme de mise à mort particulière qu’est la décollation. « J’embarque dans la grande aventure du Polyptyque Escalante une vingtaine de membres d’équipage, explique Sylvie Mongin-Algan. Des scénographes (ndlr, les Mexicains Carmen Mariscal et Carlos Torres), des comédiens, des créateurs lumière, des créateurs son, des costumiers, des techniciens… Chacune des quatre pièces vivra sa propre vie de manière indépendante, et le polyptyque nous en révélera une nouvelle, plus secrète, dans la juxtaposition de ces quatre singularités. Tout au long de ce voyage, l’équipage aura besoin d’escales, il livrera à chaque fois la pièce explorée, traversée, découverte, se nourrira du regard du public, y puisera de nouvelles forces et repartira pour une nouvelle étape, libéré de la peur de s’égarer en chemin… »
