Sans que l’on ne sache rien de cette nouvelle production (présentée à Paris avant de passer par Caen, Luxembourg et Grenade), l’apparition de Porgy sur une scène parisienne fait d’emblée événement. En effet, l’ouvrage est historique : il marque le premier opéra spécifiquement américain, largement ouvert aux musiques noires, et constitue une immense réussite sur le plan artistique. De plus, les opportunités de l’entendre et de le voir à Paris sont plus que rares. Il est probable que la chorégraphe et cinéaste Robyn Orlin, qui signe la mise en scène, très impliquée sur le plan politique dans son pays l’Afrique du Sud, soulignera la dimension raciale et sociale de Porgy and Bess. « L’opéra raconte plusieurs histoires enchevêtrées dans un contexte social et historique catastrophique, le quartier afro-américain de Charleston au début du XXème siècle. Les fils narratifs sont noués autour d’événements dramatiques : crimes, naufrage, maladie, exils, incarcérations. Pour les habitants de cet enfer, il faut choisir entre la mort, la prison, la misère ou la fuite », rappelle Emile Soulier, assistant de Robyn Orlin, dont il évoque l’intention principale, dans la continuité de ses précédents travaux : « Introduire de l’ironie, de l’humour et de la dérision dans ce récit cauchemardesque, sans chercher à en émousser la violence ». Le pianiste et chef américain Wayne Marshall, spécialiste de Gershwin, est le directeur musical du projet, avec le concours du New World Symphony.
