Londres, 6 juillet 2005. La nouvelle euphorique papillonne sur Londres, capitale désignée pour accueillir les Jeux olympiques de 2012. Dans les écoles, les bureaux, les rues, les magasins, les parcs et les maisons, elle court, fauche l’actualité, délie les commentaires, ravis ou perplexes. Partout, elle fend le cours d’un quotidien. Près de Russell square, une employée livre par dépit un précieux rapport à la concurrence ; du côté de Goresbrook, un ado en révolte se fait agresser par une bande de gitans ; dans un hôtel de St Pancras s’accouplent un jeune cadre et une junky, frère et sœur ; dans le métro, un homme kamikaze chemine vers la détonation fatale ; pas très loin de la City, une ex-étudiante retrouve son professeur ; à Hammersmith, une universitaire à la retraite oublie le temps devant des films porno… Autant d’éclats de vies traversées par la rumeur ce jour-là, brutalement frappées le lendemain, 7 juillet 2005. 4 explosions font 56 morts et plus de 700 blessés au cœur de Londres.

L’auteur Simon Stephens trame sur fond de cet événement terroriste sept tableaux qui révèlent des actes de transgression cachés dans les plis de banales existences : espionnage industriel, agression physique, voyeurisme, inceste, attentat… « Dans un monde devenu massivement surpeuplé, on a parfois l’impression qu’on ne peut survivre qu’en nous comportant comme si les gens qui nous entourent n’étaient que des objets. » explique l’auteur. « Cette forme d’objectivation caractérise l’essentiel de l’expérience urbaine contemporaine. Elle sous-tend tous les actes de transgression commis dans la pièce.». Le texte cherche à broder cette analyse, proche des thèses du philosophe Bernard Stiegler, au gré des saynètes reliées secrètement par l’Histoire, invisible à hauteur d’homme. Le metteur en scène Laurent Gutmann veut y lire également l’obscénité de la transparence, qui exhibe l’intime à vue et le menace de disparaître. Voilà sans doute trop d’intentions qui s’embrouillent et s’égarent sur le plateau en bavardes démonstrations. La scénographie superpose un espace vide en avant-scène, lieu abstrait de toutes les confessions, sur un appartement minutieusement reconstitué en coupe, où tous les comédiens attendent leur tour en observant derrière la vitre. Malgré l’intelligence du décor, la distribution inégale, le jeu empesé et la dilution de l’enjeu dramatique masquent finalement cette pornographie qui s’est glissée au cœur de la société.
