Faustin Linyekula est un artiste bien ancré dans le paysage chorégraphique, depuis ses collaborations avec des personnalités comme Opiyo Okach, Gregory Maqoma, ou Sylvain Prunenec. Pourtant, son travail s’organise autour des écritures contemporaines, tout autant théâtrales que chorégraphiques. Ainsi n’hésite-t-il pas à monter Bérénice avec des comédiens du Français, à créer à Kisangani une structure de recherche et de création pour la danse et le théâtre visuel, à convier radio et artistes pour une performance évolutive (Radio Okapi)… Sa dernière pièce, More, more, more… future, donnait elle-même une place importante à la musique ndombolo. Aujourd’hui, Pour en finir avec Bérénice extirpe l’héroïne de Racine des ors de la Comédie Française pour se jeter dans le corps et la voix de six comédiens congolais. En prenant ce parti, Faustin Linyekula sait qu’il ne joue pas la carte de l’adaptation, mais propose avant tout de se saisir de la façon dont résonnent les vers – littéralement et symboliquement – chez ces interprètes.
Un espace clos dans la réalité du Congo aujourd’hui
« Le français est notre langue, sans l’être », précise Faustin Linyekula, dans ce pays où peu de personnes le maîtrisent. Il est le fruit d’une histoire politique liée à la colonisation. L’histoire de Bérénice, reine de Palestine, qui vit un amour passionné avec l’empereur romain Titus, devient une tragédie lorsque la raison d’état doit mettre fin à cette liaison. Au cœur des affrontements : la question de l’étranger, de l’autre, qui revient sans cesse troubler la passion. Une histoire comme une métaphore, comme une façon de parler de la grande Histoire qui lie la France et le Congo. Au milieu de cette troupe de comédiens, Faustin Linyekula joue son rôle de danseur, noyé dans cette langue, et qui essaye de trouver sa place. La question de la forme, qui surprend à chaque nouvelle pièce, est posée à travers un travail toujours en mouvement : « Je crois que la forme, à un moment donné, se présente à nous. J’active le matériau, je le pousse dans une direction ou une autre jusqu’à ce que la forme se révèle ».
