Depuis son retour de New York en 1976, Michel Hallet Eghayan ne cesse d’explorer de nouvelles voies pour la composition chorégraphique. Elles l’ont conduit à travailler avec un astrophysicien, un paléoanthropologue… Et à interroger le répertoire romantique : en 1982 déjà, il avait conçu sa propre Giselle. Il se lance à nouveau le défi en 2011. Du ballet, le chorégraphe ne nie pas le romantisme, et ne déconstruit pas le fil narratif : on suit avec lui la jeune paysanne trompée, qui succombe à la tristesse mais, dans le royaume des ombres, sauve son amant de la vengeance des « willis » en l’aidant à danser jusqu’à l’aube. Mourir d’avoir trop aimé, danser par-delà la mort… Un tel récit ne pouvait que séduire le chorégraphe. Qui résume : « La danse ne dit pas l’histoire, elle est l’histoire. »
