Fille d’un des juges des Enfers et petite-fille du soleil, Phèdre a tout pour être une héroïne au surmoi en acier que la raison garderait des débordements pulsionnels. Mais Phèdre est seule en son palais, sa jeunesse est derrière elle, elle se sent inutile et abandonnée, et elle s’ennuie… Per Olov Enquist a réécrit, dans une langue dépouillée à mi chemin entre prose et poésie, les affres de la belle-mère la plus fatale de la mythologie qui s’invente une passion pour son beau-fils parce qu’elle retrouve en ses traits ceux qu’elle aima en Thésée et que cet amour comble le vide qui la ronge intérieurement. Phèdre se fait donc l’instrument du chaos, de la haine et de la destruction puisqu’aucun objet ne s’offre à son immense soif d’aimer. Vincent Dussart a choisi de disposer ses comédiens le long de trois grands murs blancs, sur des bancs où ils « attendent de jouer leur rôle, attendent la révolution, le châtiment, la mort, la résurrection d’après la représentation ou du début de la suivante ». Des comédiens suspendus dans le vide de la tragédie à laquelle ne peuvent échapper leurs personnages et contre la nécessité de laquelle ils luttent en vain, leur dignité relevant de ce combat et de l’obstination orgueilleuse de leur sève héroïque.
