Comment jugez-vous la politique culturelle actuelle ? Met-elle véritablement la culture en danger et pourquoi ?
Joël Dragutin : Le désengagement de l’Etat entraîne un risque véritable pour l’activité culturelle du pays. Les budgets baissent, la précarisation augmente sensiblement. Mais le plus dangereux est sans doute le désintérêt d’une large partie de la classe politique envers la culture. La culture n’est plus une priorité, elle n’est même plus une mode, comme elle a pu l’être dans les années 80/90. Elle n’est plus un enjeu essentiel. Il suffit, pour le constater, de se référer aux dernières campagnes électorales : aucun candidat n’avait vraiment de projet culturel ambitieux, ni à droite ni à gauche. C’est cela le plus alarmant, surtout en période de crise économique, alors que les citoyens sont en quête de sens face à un monde de plus en plus complexe et que les simplifications obscurantistes redeviennent de dangereuses tentations.

Faut-il selon vous croiser les responsabilités de l’Etat, des Régions, des Départements et des Communes pour mettre en œuvre une politique culturelle efficace ?
J. D. : Evidemment. La pluralité des partenaires financiers garantit la démocratie, l’indépendance et la liberté des créateurs et des acteurs culturels. Les élus portent des visions différentes au plan étatique ou local, elles s’enrichissent mutuellement lorsqu’existent une volonté, une politique culturelle et un dialogue intelligent et ouvert. Il faut donc prendre en compte le global et le local, qu’il y ait débat et surtout que le sort des artistes ne dépende jamais de la décision d’une seule entité. C’est essentiel à l’élaboration d’une politique culturelle forte et féconde. Dès la création du Théâtre 95, dans les années 90, la prise en compte du territoire a été l’une de nos préoccupations majeures. C’est cet ancrage qui a justifié notre présence dans l’agglomération de Cergy-Pontoise, qui était alors en pleine effervescence et connaissait un formidable essor démographique. C’est grâce à la solidarité des acteurs locaux que le Théâtre 95 a pu se développer, fidéliser un large public autour des écritures contemporaines. C’est leur soutien déterminé qui a favorisé la reconnaissance institutionnelle de notre structure, que l’Etat a labellisée comme « scène conventionnée ».
Comment concevez-vous le lien entre théâtre, culture et société ? Ce lien va-t-il de soi ?
J. D. : Le théâtre, depuis l’origine, reflète sur scène les interrogations de la Cité sur son histoire et son devenir. Il permet de mettre en scène les angoisses, les inquiétudes des citoyens sur la finitude de leur civilisation et de leur condition humaine. Aujourd’hui, ce lien semble se dissoudre parce que la civilisation judéo-chrétienne, occidentale, qui a fondé le théâtre tel que nous le connaissons, se pétrifie à la pensée de la perte de son omnipotence. Le théâtre retrouvera le lien avec la culture et la société de notre temps s’il sait répondre à cette peur autrement que par le ressentiment ou le conservatisme. Le théâtre doit et peut s’ouvrir à l’avenir qui se dessine, même si celui-ci nous paraît étrangement différent de ce que nous avions imaginé il y a une vingtaine d’années. Il faut que le théâtre ose prendre davantage en compte les avancées des sciences, des technologies et d’un point de vue culturel ce que d’aucuns nomment aujourd’hui le « mainstream ». Parce que nous sommes persuadés qu’il est urgent de sortir du banal constat plus ou moins catastrophiste pour s’interroger sur ce que pourrait être un « théâtre pour ».
